Umbria

Umbria is just east of the more visited Tuscany. Florence and Perugia are in Umbria.  I stayed at an agroturismo–a tourist farm–just one hiway exit south of Deruta, a pottery center.  We had a car and daily roamed the province seeing hill towns large and small, churches, art, and grapefields. It was April. Just off the hiway at our exit was the amazing little church Madonna dei Bagni. What made it so amazing were the hundreds of ceramic plaques covering its walls depicting the various disasters which had befallen the people of the area. They were a history of how we die and how their world had changed.

In Deruta itself one can visit large ceramic factories where dozens of artists handpaint designs on plates and bowls

or visit a tiny shop with one artist owner who throws and decorates her/his own work

Deruta has a lovely ceramic museum with very old and precious work
